Darshan Chandan, the founder of ‘Bhookh Mitao Campaign” is basically from Kutch and belongs to a business family. He has done his schooling from Gandhidham and he has done his BCA from M.S.University, Baroda and now settled in Baroda. He is into shipping business.
On a fine day, an incident struck Darshan, and along with his 5 friends started the “Bhookh Mitao Campaign” on June 7th, 2015. It is based in Baroda. It is a not-for-profit organisation directly benefitting over 2,500Â street children by providing food & spreading happiness. The organisation strives to fight issues like hunger and malnutrition in India. The organisation is working towards reaching more children with wholesome food on every single day so that no child in India shall be deprived of hunger.
But what was that striking incident which gave birth to such a revolutionary action? Let’s hear it in Darshan’s words,
“After a bitter experience with one of a reputed restaurant in Baroda; I sent them an email complaining about their service. They offered me Free Food; instead, I asked them to distribute food to poor children of the same amount of which I paid the bill. They agreed to it and after doing that, the owner sent me photos of the same. When I saw those children smiling, then only thought I had was why don't I plan something which will assure that these children get fed every day and that is when the idea of starting Bhookh Mitao Campaign struck my mind.”
What was your first step towards it?
I SPOKE TO 5 FRIENDS OF MINE ABOUT STARTING SUCH CAMPAIGN AND THEY AGREED AND WE STARTED THIS ON JUNE 7TH 2015 from SAMTA Area.
How did you reach to people with the idea?
I STARTED POSTING Pictures ON FACEBOOK AND SLOWLY AND GRADUALLY, WE EXPANDED. INITIALLY, SOCIAL MEDIA, SPECIFICALLY FACEBOOK AND THEN SUPPORT OF ALL KIND MEDIAS AND WORD OF MOUTH TOO.
How was the initial reaction and response you got?
The parents were not trusting us initially, viewers also were pulling us by making negative comments about them like, “YE LOG KABHI NAHI SUDHRENGE” and blah blah. For people, it was easy to sit in AC office and comment but only a few dared to come out of their comfort zone and became a part of BMC. We ignored such negative things and kept moving ahead on our MISSION. A Human will always try to pull another human down if he is doing something good.By de-motivating/distracting him, but I believe if your intentions are good and the cause is good, then God is also with you. I got more supporters/motivators/well wishers which helped us to take this campaign to the next level.
The biggest support throughout your journey till now:
How did you spread awareness regarding your initiative amongst the youngsters and other citizens?
We did a lot of promotional activities in public events, colleges, we were associated with Vadodara Half International Marathon 2016, such and of events helped in spreading awareness across.
How do you manage to get fund?
WE DON’T ACCEPT FUNDS
The best experience you have had till now:
There were 2 kids coming at one of our spots, they didn’t have parents, their grandparents were making them beg. Once we started craft, painting & educational activities, their grandparents felt guilty about the thing they were doing and they sent their grandchildren to their village and got them admitted into school.
Tell us about the bonding you share with the children:
They are like our kids now, their parents come to us if they have any issues or they want any help.
How do the parents of these children feel about your tasks?
WE can see lots of BLESSINGS for us in their EYES.
The struggling phase you have gone through to reach here:
Good things are always full of struggle, right from starting there were people who tried to pull us, internal politics, as being many volunteers difference of opinion, but still, we managed and we all moved ahead together. Deep gratitude to each and everyone who is associated with BMC directly or indirectly, especially to the volunteers and donors of BMC who trusted and took this campaign to this level.
How much the initiative and your other activities have changed you at the personal level?
I have seen the drastic changes in myself after starting BMC. I have learnt time management, team management, and started seeing the life in a different way.
What are your future projects/plans?
To admit children into school by counselling their parents and parallel train their parents for better employment opportunities according to their interest.
Your message to the world:
India is no. 1 country in the world having the highest number of youth population. If a group of housewives/mothers/homemakers/ can do what we are doing now, then imagine if Youth of India initiates the same thing all over India ,hunger will be eradicated. India would be Hunger free. Dear Youth of India, Older men declare war; but it is the youth that must fight and die. Let us make "India Hunger Free"
C4N India truly appreciates Darshan and his team’s initiative and efforts of trying to make a HUNGER FREE INDIA! We strongly believe that “Together, we can make anything possible”
We wish the team of BMC all the very best and we hope that many more people come forward and try their best to make it possible and join this noble cause.
